These 412's offered excellent cargo space, seating, fuel economy and excellent traction being a rear engine car. That was when friends and family actually drove on their vacations, touring National Forests and other Wonders of the World like Niagara Falls. Back in the early to mid 1070's these cars were seen traveling the country packed to the gills with camping and picnic baskets when life here was much more simple. Still powered by its original 1795 CC engine, mated to a 3-Speed Automatic Transmission, this 412 is ready to travel to places you have always wanted to see in style and comfort.

Not only are these cars virtually non existent on the street and show circuit, this particular 412 is a complete rust and accident free example and has had the luxury of living its life in the state of Georgia and has also recently received a mild restoration to preserve its appearance and performance. This VW 412 Square Back wagon is rare in more than 1 category.

Spring is only 11 weeks away, and prices for these cruisers are going to escalate as we draw nearer. I respectfully reserve the right to end the auction early given the Squareback is for sale locally, and on other international sales venues. Inspection as a condition of sale after the auction has ended will not be permitted. As the old saying goes, "its not what you expect, but what you inspect." I do not want any surprises after the sale, or negative feedback because someone didn't do their homework. I strongly suggest personal inspection, or by a qualified representative of your choosing prior to purchase.

The Squareback Type III comes with two additional center side pop-out vent windows and a factory tachometer (installs where the clock is located), all of which can be added to the car if you wish. These are very nice, and very fun urban and beach cruisers. The engine runs very nicely once warmed up,(a little cranky when cold due to the carburetors) but don't expect James Bond acceleration. The engine will probably require a valve adjustment in the near future in that they are getting a little noisier. New German manufactured front rotors and pads have been installed, and all oils have been replaced, new spark plugs, and points and condenser. Very nice glass, new weatherstrips and interior, all the lights function normally and yes, there is heat, although these cars were well known for not producing a lot of it. All else appears fine, other than minor surface rust here and there on the underside of the car, very normal for the vintage.

Additionally in the restoration a small metal patch was installed directly beneath the drivers seat floor, and another one under where the battery sets under the right rear seat. The body is very solid, with one quarter size bubble to the left front lower fender which has not changed. The Speedometer functions normally and consistently. The current mileage indicates approximately 98K, however I noted the odometer became intermittent after a couple of months of driving.

From my understanding, as conveyed to me by its original owner, the engine was overhauled at approximately 60K miles, and twin Weber carburetors were installed, replacing the problematic fuel injection in most of the models.

Originating out of West Florida, and owned by a VW restoration and repair facility owner, it received a rather comprehensive, very nice driver quality restoration.

Representing the final year of production for the very versatile and now rare Volkswagen Squareback Type III Wagon, illustrated herein and now offered for your consideration is an absolutely fun and nicely restored representation of this model.
